LPN Employment and Work
Licensed practical nurses (LPN's) work with patients in various settings. Typically LPN's work under the supervision of a licensed physician or a registered nurse. LPN employment and work involves things such as providing basic bedside care, recording patients' vital signs, giving injections, giving enemas, monitoring catheters, and dressing wounds.This all will be learned during your LVN Training. LPN work also involves helping patients with sitting up, eating, bathing, dressing, standing, and walking.
LPN work can sometimes include collecting blood samples or urine samples for testing. Or LPN employment and work could include helping physicians or registered nurses do actual tests on patients. LPN work could also include recording fluid intake, recording food intake, cleaning and monitoring medical equipment, or teaching family members how to care for a patient at home. Make sure to pay special attention to these things in your LPN classes, these skills will come in handy in your profession.
LPN employment and work can occur in various settings. For instance, LPN employment and work could occur in doctors' offices, hospitals, nursing homes, community health care facilities, federal government agencies, or in home health care settings. Some LPN employment and work could occur within a travel context as well. For example, some LPN's choose to become travel LPN's which means that they sign up with staffing agencies which specialize in travel nursing. Signing up with travel nurse staffing agencies enables LPN's to find work in various cities nationwide where housing and other benefits are provided in addition to a nursing salary. Typically LPN employment and work occurs over the course of a 40 hour work week. However, the time of LPN employment and work may vary in that LPN's may choose to work during the day, night, or weekend shift.
Salaries for LPN employment and work vary depending on the work setting, the city the nurse is employed in, and whether the nurse is working a full time permanent job or a travel nursing job. Typically the salary range for LPN employment and work is $17 an hour to $23 per hour. And if the LPN employment and work is occurring in a travel nursing job, the salary could be $18 an hour or higher plus housing included on top of that.
In terms of career path, LPN's can choose to remain LPN's for the duration of their careers. However, LPN's may also choose to go back to school to achieve the RN (a two year degree), or BSN (bachelor's degree), or MSN (master's degree). Typically, in terms of LPN employment and work, getting an RN or higher degree does enable a higher salary and so many LPN's do go back for further schooling to qualify for a higher rate of pay.
Employment outlook for LPN employment and work is expected to grow at a higher rate than other professions. Right now, it looks like the best areas for LPN employment and work are expected to be in nursing care and in home health care although this could change. Individuals interested LPN employment and work are advised to talk to individuals who are already working as LPN's. Also to become more knowledgeable about LPN employment and work it is important to read as much about the profession as possible. For instance, reading internet articles, magazine articles, newspaper articles or books about nursing can be very important in terms of helping a person to gain a sense of what being an LPN is like.
