For nursing professionals that wish to further their careers by obtaining their licensed practical nursing certification, there are a variety of educational options. No matter which path you choose by going to classes online or in a traditional classroom setting the course materials and information that is going to be covered is the same.
The LPN Classes
The classes that are needed to achieve this next level of nursing goal are much more in depth than those that are needed for a home health aide or other entry level nursing occupation. The courses are an Anatomy and Physiology course that provides detailed instruction on the components and make-up of the human body from the cellular level through major body systems. Medical Terminology courses are also included to provide a broader knowledge of working medical terms that LPN’s will encounter on a daily basis. The next course that needs to be taken is the Pharmacology for Nurses course. This course relates common drugs, their interactions, and side effects in patients. This course is essential so that nurses can detect a possible fatal drug interaction with their patients. The next two courses of Surgical Nursing and Pediatric Nursing are relevant to the new licensed practical nursing student because they never know what type of emergency or patient that they will encounter during their shift. These courses are designed as introductory courses to make nurses familiar with procedures if the event should occur. They also offer an insight into new specialized nursing fields in which the new licensed practical nurse may want to pursue his or her career and education.
The Role of the LPN
Licensed practical nurses are essentially the faces that come to mind when one mentions a nurse. They are the highly visible nursing force that is seen in hospitals and emergency care facilities. LPN’s are highly educated nurses that have either obtained their state certification or associates degree. The LPN is like any other position in the medical care field and can be a stepping stone towards a greater career goal, or a final step in a lifelong career. In either case, there is a shortage of educated, certified, and skilled licensed practical nurses around the country. Entry level nurses that wish to enhance their careers or further their educations should look into becoming a certified LPN.
The Pathway to LPN Certification
The aspiring nurse first must have a need to further their career or educational goals. With the advent of online learning there is a way for anyone who is interested in obtaining LPN certification to do so. If you are currently working and cannot attend traditional technical, vocational, or community college to take the required courses than there are a multitude of distance or online learning options. Both ways provide the opportunity for motivated nurses to further their education and career goals.
