The role and duties of a Dialysis LPN many vary according to the laws and guidelines of the different states. A Dialysis LPN has to have a proven educational and clinical competence to handle the different procedures in dialysis and should have got experience in the field. Many of the states regulations state that the RN can delegate hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis to the Dialysis LPN and the RN should be there to supervise the entire procedure.
A Dialysis LPN is expected to gather the patient’s data for assessment before the procedure. He can then perform the procedure of dialysis by inserting Tesio catheter or by using access devices which are implanted. A Dialysis LPN can also give intravenous medication during the process, which is deemed to be within his scope of duties. He can also take specimens of blood from the central line tubing during the dialysis, and carry out all the caring of the patient which is required during a dialysis treatment. However the Dialysis LPN is not authorized to carry out dialysis for patients who are very ill and in unstable condition. He is also not allowed to administer on his own any blood products or blood.
Certain states might require the candidate to pass the CDN (Certified Dialysis Nurse) examination to become a Dialysis LPN. The candidate can also study diseases of the kidney and other related diseases which are usually encountered by a dialysis nurse.
