Clinical LPN

A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is an important member of the medical team and is responsible for the direct patient care on a day to day basis and also other important clinical duties. The role of a Clinical LPN covers a large area of duties, and his number of tasks will be governed by the state’s guidelines and laws. A Clinical LPN will also have his work cut out by the health establishment for whom he is working.

The Clinical LPN is assigned with the task of preparing the clinic room which includes preparing the different medical equipments and apparatus which will be used during examination and other medical procedures on the patient. Clinical LPN is responsible for routine duties of screening and recording the condition of the patient on a day to day basis. He has to check the history of the patient and take the vital signs and conduct all preliminary examination. Assisting the physician in further detailed examination, the Clinical LPN also has to gather all the lab reports of tests which were conduced and keep them ready for the physician. He is also in charge of initiating the requests for diagnostic testing which are required.

The Clinical LPN performs many administrative and clerical duties as well. He is responsible for scheduling admissions and surgeries for the different patients under his care. He is in charge of maintaining the patient’s records and keeping the charts up to date prior to the visit of the physician. The Clinical LPN must maintain medical supply storage areas in an orderly manner and keep them clean and tidy. He is also an important link between the patient and the physician as he has to report all the abnormalities in the patient’s behavior and any adverse reactions to medications that he has observed in the patient.

The Clinical LPN also has to interact with the patient’s family and friends on a continuous basis. He has to be able to effectively communicate with the patient’s family in keeping them up to date about the patient’s progress and present condition. He might even have to communicate by phone or letter in certain situations in obtaining pre-admission certification or for getting the papers ready before a surgery.

Clinical LPN usually has to work under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and must have a clear understanding of what is required of him and perform his duties as a responsible member of a healthcare team.
